As we draw close to what would be the anniversary of the last carnival before the dreaded covid 19 entered the fete, it’s only right to get people up to date on the current 2021 soca songs and what we expect going forward.
Although it is blatantly clear that we will all probably be feteless and carnival less until 2022, that is no reason for true soca junkies and feterans to still be stuck at March 2020 with their soca knowledge. Therefore with the help of RicotheDj, I have compiled a not so short list of 2021 soca songs and riddims for you all to get acquainted with before leaving you up to your own exploration.

In some of these songs you can see how this pandemic has affected the soca industry and the ways people are dealing with it. Next Year by Chrissy D have me up in my feelings everyday!! You know we all have a clear memory of our last fete and start feeling deep regret immediately. “Why didn’t I fete harder or drink more?” Or even when you skipped a fete because you expected there to be more (like me and B4 Carnival) and now we’re all praying to the Soca Gods for forgiveness, we’ll all fete harder and never miss a fete again if they end the parfait so we can go back on the road.
By Any Means really speaks to our reality right now, we really can’t gather in large groups or even be out after a certain hour but we would do ANYTHING to get rid of the tabanca in our hearts, zoom fetes and streams will have us jumping up in our houses for now and we’ll just have to accept it because it’s not about the location but the energy and togetherness even if we’re apart.
While Heart of the People shows how the artistes and other people in the entertainment industry are dealing with the panini. To me it shows the outrage most of us feel, to others, fetes are just people wining us on each other and drinking but to a lot of people it’s their entire livelihood. From the artistes down to the people on the road side selling soup and jerk chicken, this is how some of them get money to send their kids to school and pay their bills and people should remember that when they argue against finding a way to reopen the entertainment sector in their island. We, the patrons, can always find alternatives to large fetes because all we need is the energy, but these people are still losing. It’s a thoughtful piece that everyone can understand.
Finally, Backyard Jam is exactly what we want right now, finding a way to adhere to covid protocols and still fete together. It reflects how we feel, we don't need any big speakers or promoters, because it's not about the flashy set up and big name artistes it's about the unity and togetherness and our shared love for soca music. As Kes said it's for the love of the music.
Seeing that we won't seem to be leaving this pandora any time soon it's only right for us to expect more songs about the panny, quarantine and being inside. Some artistes are even thinking about genre hopping like Motto right now with Afrobeats. The least we could do is stream their songs and keep up to date on the music (subscribe to Julianspromo RIGHT NOW and turn on notifications) with that being said here is a 2020 recap and a 2021 mix.
